Missouri Infant Killed in Dog Attack

|

WDAF-TV in Kansas City is reporting that a babysitter in southeast Missouri has plead guilty to second-degree involuntary manslaughter following the death of a 13-month-old girl in a dog attack.

33-year-old Erica Jordan of Cape Girardeau took a plea deal in accepting the manslaughter charge, in exchange for the court dropping a charge of engendering the welfare of a child. Prosecutors stated that Girardeau was watching Loxli Chavez in March when the infant was mauled by a pit bull-mix. Jordan claimed she was housing the animal for her brother at the time of the attack, and admitted she tried to keep it locked up as much as possible because it was, “not good with children.” In her statement, Jordan also said the dog had bitten her son previously, but that she thought it would no longer be a threat after being neutered.

Jordan will be sentenced on January 18th. She could face up to 4 years in prison.

Dog Bite Personal Injury Suits

While most dogs are harmless, lovable creatures, no one should ever have to suffer an attack from a vicious animal because an owner/caretaker was too negligent to properly supervise it. With the help of a skilled dog bite lawyer, you may be able to receive a settlement to recoup for medical expenses and compensation commensurate with your pain and suffering.

If you or someone you know has been bitten or attacked by a dog, you are entitled to seek compensation for:

  • Bodily harm
  • Head and face injuries
  • Contusions
  • Scarring
  • Broken Bones
  • Amputations
  • Emotional trauma

Unfortunately, almost all dog bite victims are minors, under 18-years of age. Because minors cannot usually fight for themselves in our legal system, it is up to responsible adults to fight for compensation on their behalf. Additionally, the family members of children and others killed in dog attacks may be able to pursue a wrongful death suit following their loss.

No matter what the circumstances are, the responsible parties should always be held accountable when dogs attack. Hire an attorney today who can argue the seriousness of dog bites in court.
