What Is Valsartan?

Valsartan (also known by the brand name “Diovan”) is a medication used to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. It works by blocking the body’s angiotensin receptors in order to alleviate tension in blood vessels and improve blood flow. Valsartan is often given to people who experience heart attacks in order to reduce their risk of experiencing subsequent episodes.

In reducing blood pressure, Valsartan can sometimes produce dizziness, fainting, weakness, and an abnormally slow heart rate. If you or someone you know is taking Valsartan and exhibits any of these symptoms, seek medical attention right away.

2018 Valsartan Recall

In July and August of 2018, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued voluntary recalls of valsartan-containing products from the following producers and medication re-packagers:

  • Camber Pharmaceuticals Inc.
  • A-S Medication Solutions LLC
  • AvKARE
  • Bryant Ranch Prepack Inc.
  • H.J. Harkins Company Inc.
  • Lake Erie Medical / Quality Care Products LLC
  • Northwind Pharmaceuticals
  • NuCare Pharmaceuticals Inc.
  • Proficient Rx LP
  • RemedyRepack
  • Teva Pharmaceuticals / Major Pharmaceuticals / Actavis
  • Prinston Pharmaceutical Inc. / Solco Healthcare LLC

According to the FDA, these are the specific valsartan drugs included in the recall. Not all valsartan-containing products on the market are being recalled and not all of them are necessarily considered unsafe at this point in time (as of August 16, 2018). However, valsartan-containing products from the above producers and re-packagers have been found to contain a carcinogenic chemical known as N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA).

What to Do if You’ve Been Harmed by a Valsartan-containing Product

You must secure legal counsel right away if you or someone you love has fallen ill, received a cancer diagnosis, or experienced serious medical complications since taking a valsartan medication. It could be the result of the presence of NDMA or another danger posed by the drug.

In any case, the types of injuries you may sustain because of valsartan-containing medications can put your life at risk and require costly treatment. We may be able to help you cover your costs and ensure the responsible parties are held accountable for the damages you suffer.
