The Dangers of Teething Tablets

|

Over-the-counter, homeopathic teething tablets have been available in stores for several years now as a means of soothing the pains of teething babies. What many people do not know, however, is that these tablets can potentially be deadly. According to the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA), 10 deaths of children and at least 400 adverse events have been reported in association with the tablets.

The benefits of homeopathic teething remedies such as gels and tablets manufactured by Hyland’s, Raritan Pharmaceuticals, and others have not been scientifically proven, and the FDA has never fully evaluated the safety of these products. As such, parents are advised to cease using these products and to take their child to a doctor as soon as possible if they should experience any medical issues.

  • Teething tablet-related deaths and events have involved symptoms such as:
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Sleepiness
  • Skin flushing
  • Difficult urination
  • Tremors
  • Shortness of breath
  • Irritability
  • Agitation

As a result of these concerns, CVS and Walgreens have pulled all homeopathic teething pills from store shelves and Hyland’s has announced that it will no longer market the products in the U.S. The same company issued a massive recall of its homeopathic teething tablets and ear pain liquids after certain tests suggested the products may contribute to belladonna poisoning in infants – a substance which can have potentially fatal consequences if ingested in large amounts.
