Costco will reportedly ban sales of glyphosate-containing herbicides in all stores nationwide, including Monsanto’s top-selling weed killer, Roundup. According to the World Health Organization’s cancer research, glyphosate has been deemed a “probable human carcinogen.” Glyphosate has been linked to an increased risk of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma. This deadly product is readily available in everyday products around the world, though Costco is set to pull all products from its shelves in the spring.
This major development is a victory for consumers and activists who actively pursued this ban by pressuring public and private sector officials to finally make the change. Moms Across America founder Zen Honeycutt strongly championed for this move by vigorously petitioning Costco to stop selling Roundup. The organization’s noble efforts continue, and the petition states: “We call on Home Depot and Lowe’s today to step up as Costco has to protect us, your customers, and stop selling Roundup (and all glyphosate herbicides) now, due to its carcinogenic effects and lack of labeling.” For the sake of public safety and health, we can only hope other stores and chains will follow suit.
According to Costco employees, the decision was also swayed by the landmark Dewayne Johnson lawsuit in which a terminally ill groundskeeper was awarded $289 million after falling ill due to years of Roundup use.
